To thine own self be true

This week, I announced to my team and to my colleagues at Precedent, the web agency I’ve worked with for four years that I would be leaving. After spending such a long time working with some really great people, and doing some rather nice work along the way, it’s a big step and one that has been long in the making.
So, why do it? The title of this post gives the hint: to thine own self be true — words I spent a lot of time gazing at it at the Playful conference at the Conway Hall. For much of those past four years, I’ve been looking after a great team, helping them — I hope — to become better consultants, strategists and information architects, managing the balance of their work, and handling all the other stuff that managing a user experience team entails (as well as, y’know, delivering lots of projects too).
But this year, it’s become clear to me just how much I want to devote myself to being a practitioner, to learning from others and becoming the very best information architect and user experience designer I can be. And, I can only do that by practising my craft, day in, day out. So, I’ve taken the big step and made the decision to go independent, giving myself the opportunity to work with a range of people, both at other agencies and on the client-side too, to stretch myself, to continue my learning and be all that I can be.
It’s scary stuff, but utterly exhilarating too. 2010 is already looking like a very big year indeed.
